I know this is a big deal, and I'm working on it today. I don't see much point in enabling the old ones, because nobody found them useful.
So, for the new report, I plan to have the following:
Sector/planet where the fight was (Grid reference)
ships on your side, ships on the other side
ships you lost, ships you killed
The winner
Anything else ?

I would be interested in seeing a round-by-round breakdown of the battle, if that isn't showing too much of the sausage-making.

I don't think that's possible. The email limit is around 2K and I can see that easily being exceeded once the number of ships gets up there.

Will this be the same information if you attack a colony/outpost?

Yes, in which case it would include the planet as either the attacker or defender whichever the case may be.

Is there any way, if you lose, to see how much damage you did to the colony? or is there really no damage done it's either you win or lose?

On a side note we are also building in to the client a "Report" tab on the "Message" screen, as well as implementing the "Notices" so the little popup notices will be recorded in the "Notices" tab, it will only list the last 100 notices you have received.
On the report tab you will also have a button on the report that will let you jump to the sector or planet referenced by the report. It should make locating the place much easier.

Probably not possible, I'll have to see. The colony does take damage, but unless someone can do a finishing move on it, it will heal up for the next attack, so essentially fights are just win/lose.

I remember in the tutorial video I think, it said that you could pull your ships away in the middle of combat. Is that still true? Or the entire battle happens instantaneously?

Any ETA on when the combat notifications are going in? I'm now warring with one of my neighbors and find that I have to memorize the state of the sector when I log out just to know what the heck changed when I come back on. VERY annoying not having any indication that some outpost was attacked unless you actually go look at the system.
Also, in addition to combat reports, can we get some notification when a player you are at war with moves ships in to a system in which you have an outpost or colony?
Finally, and somewhat unrelated, the issue of combat around stars needs to fixed quickly. It is now possible for someone to park a fleet in orbit around a star in your system and be untouchable until they choose to attack a planet. This is problematic.

I agree 100%! No way should an enemy fleet be able to sit unmolested in your own system. There has to be some kind of function that allows your defenders to come out and meet the would be attackers, ie: Defensive Patrol, or something like that.

Now that I've finally winnowed through the 700+ bug reports, I'll be working on the battle reports today.
Originally there was an orbital you could build that would warn you of approaching hostiles. It was removed because we couldn't figure out how to implement it. I see the same issue with the request for notification of an enemy at your sun. If he moves in 50 cruisers one at a time, you might get 50 reports. If someone can propose a plan that doesn't involve me having to track every ship and doesn't result in spam or can't be abused, I'm listening.
Sun combat should work now. If it doesn't, then someone needs to tell me.

On the topic of what reports should contain, I would find the following very useful:
Oppoenents name
If there was a planet present, I would like the name of the planet, and whether it was an outpost or a colony.
