I could be wrong on this but I think the first rank costs XX hours and additional ranks after that cost a far reduced YY hours. At least for the high tier researches. Dont know if they all work that way but I too noticed 'cost' reduction, after first rank of some higher level researches.

Can you imagine havinge to research 140 hours x9 to hit full rank? it would just never happen.
